From “University” to “University System”: A historic milestone affirming the stature and standing of Hanoi University of Industry

The decision signed by Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long to transform Hanoi University of Industry into Hanoi University of Industry represents not merely a change in institutional model, but a historic milestone of profound significance. It recognizes the remarkable and sustained development of an academic institution with a 127-year tradition, officially elevating HaUI to become the 12th university in Vietnam operating under a multidisciplinary and multi-field university model, and further affirming its position within the national higher education system.

On November 20, 2025, Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long signed Decision No. 2536/QD-TTg approving the transformation of Hanoi University of Industry into Hanoi University of Industry. Under this Decision, Hanoi University of Industry is defined as a public service unit and a public higher education institution under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, subject to state management in education by the Ministry of Education and Training and territorial administration by the Hanoi People’s Committee.

With this official transition, Hanoi University of Industry becomes the 12th university nationwide, joining the ranks of Vietnam’s leading higher education institutions, alongside Vietnam National University, Hanoi; Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City; Hanoi University of Science and Technology; and the National Economics University.

In preparation for this strategic transformation, the University proactively completed its organizational restructuring by establishing five member schools, including the School of Foreign Languages and Tourism, the School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, the School of Economics, the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and the School of Information and Communications Technology. This structure lays a solid foundation for multidisciplinary development and integrated education, research, and innovation.

Currently, Hanoi University of Industry enrolls more than 35,000 students and learners, supported by a workforce of approximately 1,500 lecturers, staff, and employees. The transition to the university model significantly enhances institutional autonomy, enabling the University to optimize resources, improve governance effectiveness, and elevate the quality of education, scientific research, and innovation.

In recognition of its outstanding contributions to national development and defense, the University has been awarded numerous prestigious honors by the Party and the State, including the Ho Chi Minh Order, the title of Hero of Labor in the Renovation Period, and many other high-ranking national and international decorations.

Becoming one of the 12 universities in Vietnam marks a strategic turning point, affirming the stature, prestige, and renewed governance capacity of Hanoi University of Industry.
