SETSM 2026: Driving smart manufacturing and sustainable growth

As global integration continues to deepen and environmental requirements become increasingly stringent, the transition toward a circular economy is emerging as a defining trend of our time. This shift calls for new approaches to improving productivity, optimizing supply chains, and reducing carbon emissions in a sustainable manner. In this context, Hanoi University of Industry (HaUI) hosted the 3rd International Conference on Sustainable and Emerging Technologies for Smart Manufacturing (SETSM 2026) on April 15, 2026. The conference gathered a diverse community of international scholars, researchers, and industry experts, creating a vibrant academic environment for knowledge exchange and collaborative innovation.

SETSM 2026 convened leading international experts, researchers, and delegates

In the opening remarks, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Van Dong, Vice Rector of HaUI, emphasized that Vietnam is entering a pivotal stage of innovation-driven development. The effective integration of technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, big data, and automation is becoming fundamental to modern industry. These technologies not only enhance productivity but also contribute to economic restructuring and support the country’s long-term sustainable growth ambitions. Designed as a high-level academic forum, SETSM 2026 provided a platform for presenting forward-looking research aligned with both digital transformation and sustainability goals. The conference aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical advances and practical applications, ensuring that research outcomes can respond directly to real-world industrial challenges.

The plenary sessions offered valuable insights through a series of keynote presentations. Prof. Bui Van Ga, former Deputy Minister of Education and Training, discussed the integration of biomass into hybrid renewable energy systems as a promising direction for clean energy production. Assoc. Prof. Giulio Mattera from the University of Naples Federico II shared his work on applying machine learning to monitor and improve metal additive manufacturing processes. In addition, Prof. Chen-Kuei Chung from National Cheng Kung University and Assoc. Prof. Anchit Bijalwan from British University Vietnam presented their research on energy harvesting technologies as well as emerging approaches in digital security and forensic analysis.

Parallel technical sessions explored a wide range of advanced topics, including mechatronics, next-generation automotive engineering, smart materials, and microchip design. Many of the studies presented demonstrated strong practical relevance. Notable examples include a three-dimensional positioning system based on ultra-wideband technology to enhance logistics efficiency, as well as intelligent warehouse solutions designed to support mold maintenance. These contributions highlight the conference’s focus on addressing real operational challenges faced by industry. Following a rigorous peer review process, selected papers from the conference will be published by Springer and indexed in major academic databases such as Google Scholar and DBLP. SETSM 2026 reaffirmed Hanoi University of Industry’s role as a bridge between academia and industry, while underscoring a strong commitment to advancing core technologies, promoting sustainable development, and supporting Vietnam’s deeper global integration.
