Bringing smart health monitoring technology into the Home: HaUI students develop intelligent home health monitoring system

For many families, health monitoring still relies on occasional measurements. Blood pressure monitors, thermometers and smart scales provide individual readings at a given point in time, but offer limited insight into how health indicators change over time. Addressing this gap, five students from Hanoi University of Industry (HaUI) have developed a research project entitled “Research and Development of a Smart Home Health Monitoring System.” The project recently won First Prize at the University-level Student Scientific Research Conference.

The student research team from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering presents the project “Research and Development of a Smart Home Health Monitoring System” at the Student Scientific Research Conference.

Under the guidance of Dr. Tong Thi Ly, five students from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Khuc Van Du, Nguyen Tuan Dung, Bui Anh Quan, Ho Dinh Quan and Nguyen Trong Phu, began their research by looking closely at health monitoring practices in households. For the team, understanding what users actually need was the starting point for identifying a meaningful research problem and developing a practical solution.

The survey showed that many households already have basic health monitoring devices, such as blood pressure monitors, thermometers and health scales. However, these devices generally operate independently, providing individual readings without creating a continuous record of health data. Information is often recorded manually or not retained, making it difficult to track changes over time. This can be particularly challenging for older adults and people with chronic conditions, who may benefit from more consistent health monitoring.

These findings led the team to develop a system that brings multiple health indicators together in a single platform. The proposed system is designed to collect and store health data over time while applying artificial intelligence to support the analysis and classification of potential health risks. “What users need is not simply another measuring device, but a system that helps them better understand their health status,” the research team said.

The team’s initial idea was straightforward: measure and store health data. As the research progressed, however, the students found that the value of the system depended less on the number of features than on its ability to make health monitoring more convenient and continuous for users.

The system was gradually developed to support health history management, data synchronisation, remote monitoring and AI-assisted risk classification. Each addition and adjustment was guided by the same question: how can this make the system more convenient and useful for users?

A measurement may take only a few seconds, but developing the system required months of work on sensor calibration, data processing and AI model training. One of the team’s main challenges was not simply integrating additional technologies, but developing a system that is sufficiently accurate and stable while remaining simple enough for older users to operate with ease. This user-centred approach has kept practical needs at the heart of the project, ensuring that technology serves a clearly defined purpose rather than becoming an end in itself.

According to the team, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things and cloud computing are creating new possibilities for continuous health monitoring, supporting earlier identification of potential risks and enabling individuals to take a more proactive approach to health management. These technologies are not intended to replace doctors, but can serve as supporting tools for individuals, families and healthcare professionals in monitoring health information and making informed decisions.

The team plans to further develop the project by integrating smart wearable devices, developing a mobile application and conducting trials in healthcare facilities. These steps would allow the students to further evaluate the system’s performance and practical applicability in real-world settings.

For the five HaUI students, the value of the project extends beyond the research findings and the award. The experience has given them an opportunity to identify a real-world issue, translate it into a scientific research question and seek solutions through their professional knowledge. This approach reflects HaUI’s orientation in student scientific research: connecting academic knowledge with practical needs, encouraging students to develop solutions that serve the community and contribute to sustainable development.
