HaUI and University of Portsmouth expand strategic research cooperation
On May 5, 2026, Hanoi University of Industry (HaUI) hosted a working session with Professor Raymond Lee of the University of Portsmouth (UK) to explore new frontiers in global research and higher education collaboration. Professor Lee, recognized among the world’s top 2% of scientists and serving as Co-Chair of the UK-Vietnam Higher Education Partnership Network, shared transformative visions for the future of academic synergy between the two nations.

Overview of the meeting
Welcoming the UK delegation, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kieu Xuan Thuc, Rector of Hanoi University of Industry underscored the university's commitment to expanding its international network. He emphasized that HaUI’s strategic focus remains on fostering academic exchange and applied research to further elevate its standing in the global Impact Rankings. The Rector expressed optimism that the discussions would soon translate into actionable frameworks, particularly in high-growth sectors such as healthcare, mechanical engineering, and robotics.

Sharing this vision, Professor Raymond Lee highlighted that the core of international collaboration lies in fairness and sustainability. Rather than partnering based on similarities, institutions should complement each other’s strengths. This mindset requires researchers to move beyond traditional boundaries to develop innovative and transformative projects.
Drawing on his extensive experience in biomechanics and biomedical engineering, Professor Lee stressed that research must be driven by real-world user needs and market demands. Academic work should directly address societal challenges and generate tangible impact, rather than remaining confined to publications. He cited examples from the UK, where artificial intelligence and computer vision are applied to assist doctors in accurately measuring gastric lesions through endoscopy, as well as ongoing research efforts aimed at predicting gastric cancer risks in Vietnam.

Professor Raymond Lee, speaking at the meeting
For Hanoi University of Industry, strong connections with industry partners provide a solid foundation for advancing key engineering areas, including robotics, automation, sensor technologies, and edge computing. To maximize this potential, Professor Raymond Lee proposed the development of interdisciplinary research teams that would bring together specialists in artificial intelligence, mechatronics, and healthcare to address increasingly complex real-world challenges. The discussion also highlighted joint PhD supervision as a promising avenue for cooperation, offering a practical framework to enhance academic exchange, foster mutual trust, and lay the groundwork for a long-term strategic partnership between the two institutions.
